Spotting the signs of modern day slavery.
What is modern day slavery?
Modern day slavery is when a victim is unable to leave their situation of exploitation, controlled by threats, punishment, and violence. Often for the purpose of someone else's game, it often goes undetected as people might not think it's happening in their area and they might not know what to look out for.
Modern day slavery can take many forms. The most common ones are labor exploitation. Victims are forced to work without their consent for little or no pay, whilst often threatened by their abuser.
Sexual exploitation: Victims are exploited through non-consensual abuse for the gratification or financial gain of another person or group of people.
Criminal exploitation: Victims are forced to commit crimes such as shoplifting and drug dealing under the control of criminals.
Domestic servitude: Victims are forced to perform household tasks for their abusers for little or no pay at all.
Organ harvesting: living, or deceased victims are recruited by threat or force for their organs.
One of the methods of modern day slavery is human trafficking. Human trafficking is the recruitment or transportation of a person by a means of deception, threat force, or taken advantage of a person's vulnerable situation.
What are the facts?
Slavery is hidden crime. So many people are surprised to learn it exists in the UK today in 2019, there were more than 9,200 reports of modern day slavery to the unseen helpline, an increase of 25% from the previous year.
However, the Global Slavery Index believes the number of victims could be much higher at 136,000. In the UK alone, that's one in every 238 workers in the UK. Of the cases reported, 16% of the criminal exploitation indicated the involvement of a child, which is an increase of 9% from the previous year.
